Valentine’s Day food adventures

Valentine’s Day for us is just an excuse to eat ALL the food we want! We took a trip out to San Gabriel and tried out a new (to us) Vietnamese restaurant called Golden Deli. We didn’t realize what crazy traffic there would be though, and it took us nearly 1.5 hours to get there. By that time, we were starving and we were this close to giving in and just eating anywhere (the McDonald’s we were passing by were starting to look pretty darn good).

I’m glad we held out, though. Once we got there, we ordered and were brought our food within minutes. It was fresh and delicious! We started off with some crispy egg rolls, and then our entrees followed shortly after. Bun rieu for me, and rare steak pho for Mike. We also had to get my favorite dessert drink, Che Ba Mau. we left the restaurant with extremely full and satisfied tummies.

Blaze pizza

image

Tried out Blaze pizza for lunch today, and boy was I impressed. Unlimited toppings on a personal sized pizza for only $7.99?? Unbelievable! I got italian sausage, pepperoni, smoked ham, applewood bacon, crushed garlic, cloves of garlic, mushroom, basil, sauteed onion, cherry tomatoes, and artichokes. The pizza was ready in about five minutes, and SO good. The crust was not soggy (one of my biggest complaints about a similar pizza joint, 800 Degrees). A very satisfying pizza – thanks to my brother for the recommendation!

85c pastries and Bludso’s BBQ

My coworker told me about Bludso’s BBQ a LONG time ago. I’ve always wanted to go, but the idea of having to go into Compton made me a little bit nervous. After some convincing, Mike managed to get me to agree to make the trek over there today.

We stopped by the new 85c bakery in Gardena first, and loaded up on our favorite breads. I didn’t think we were going to buy that much, but as you can see, we somehow filled up an entire box! Oops. However, I’m not sorry.

We made our way over to Bludso’s, and there were quite a few people outside waiting for their food on a Tuesday afternoon. We joined them, and were rewarded shortly after with our order – rib tips, brisket, ribs, and our sides (mac and cheese, beans, and potato salad). Since the place is only a to-go joint with no room for seating, we drove home and dug in.

The rib tips were tasty, but the ribs themselves were slightly disappointing (parts were dry and chewy). However, the brisket made up for everything – it was AMAZING. Tender, flavorful, with just enough fat in the meat so that it melted in your mouth. Totally worth it.

Teemo progress shots

Finished up my Teemo order for my Etsy sale today. It was quite a process! I decided to make two extra, since I had the extra fabric to do so. Also, it really helps to make more pieces at once, since it gives me more practice and doing one task repetitively and thus makes each attempt better than the last.

The detailed embroidery work on Teemo’s face was such a huge pain – it’s really tough to do something like that without an embroidery machine. Also, we finished off an entire bag of stuffing completing these guys! They are definitely FAT Teemos. Haha.

Library Alehouse

We went out to celebrate Mike completing his latest project at work (Captain America 2)! Congrats Mike!

The food was pretty tasty, and surprisingly I was able to find a drink I liked! I recommend the pear cider there, not too strong and a really nice flavor. The bison burger was good as well – I was just thrown off when they recommended it rare. Yikes! We opted for medium, so it wasn’t quite as tender, but easier for me to justify eating.

Waffle Party!

Mike and I went to a friend’s waffle party for lunch today.  The hosts did an amazing job of providing all kinds of batters and toppings.  To make things interesting, everyone could submit a waffle entry of their own creation to be judged.  The top three winners would receive a prize.  This was our entry.
Yes, that’s our homage to Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles.  We created a double decker banana caramel waffle with blueberries mixed in, then tucked in chocolate and peanut butter chips inside and topped it off with a piece of fried chicken drizzled in maple syrup.  Sadly, our entry placed 5th out of 6 contestants.  Oh well.  At least we weren’t last!

Golden hour neighborhood stroll

Last week, I was reading SewPetiteGal‘s blog, who happens to be one of my favorite bloggers.  She was having a blog sale, and one of the items up for grabs was this knit sweater.  I was drawn to it immediately – the texture, color, style and the silver thread woven in through the fabric – it was perfect!  I had to have it.  I got it a few days ago and it fits like a glove.  I especially love all the pockets with black piping.
I also have to introduce the newest addition to my Kate Spade collection – the Charlotte Street Rena tote in tan Saffiano leather.  It’s gorgeous and I love the style.  Since I’ve been wanting a bag like this for a long time, I finally gave in and bought it over the holidays.
This is also one of the rare times I’ve worn my Christian Siriano boots – mostly because I can’t really walk in heels without falling.  I hate wobbling around like a small toddler, but they are just too cute for me to give away.
What I’m wearing:

Sweater: LOFT (Similar here)
Tank: Ann Taylor (old)
Pants: Uniqlo
Booties: Christian Siriano for Payless (old)
Bag: Kate Spade Charlotte Street Rena
Necklace: eBay
Bracelet: H&M

Lunch at Cook’s Tortas

Mike and I met up with an old coworker for lunch today, and he took us to a restaurant in Monterey Park that we hadn’t tried before.  Cook’s Tortas was pretty delicious – their menu was so extensive it was overwhelming to try and choose just one.

Here we split the Mole Verde torta (Grilled chicken, onions, lettuce, pepita-tomatillo mole) and the Ranchito (Grilled skirt steak, dry aged chorizo, nopalitos salad, spicy serrano guacamole, and fresh cheese).  We couldn’t resist trying the pineapple mint agua fresca, which was so fresh and bursting with flavor.  Two thumbs up – we’ll definitely be back again.
