Chicken and Rice truck

Yes, Chicken and Rice has made it to LA! Mike managed to hunt down the truck tonight on his way home, and brought home a chicken plate and a lamb plate as a surprise. You’re the best, Mikey. :)

The verdict? Pretty good! I’m impressed, given that there were a lot of disappointed reviews on Yelp saying it didn’t compare with the NYC original. Yes, it’s not exactly the same, but it’s still very tasty. The white sauce is especially good. And it’s kind of a nice twist with the ground chicken.

Mike said the truck was really hard to find, unfortunately – hopefully they work that out soon so they can get more business!

Thai Town adventure

After watching Anthony Bourdain eat his way through LA’s Thai Town a while back, Mike and I put it on our list of things to try. Today, we headed over to follow in Bourdain’s footsteps.

Our first stop was Sapp Coffee Shop, home of the famous boat noodles. According to Bourdain, these noodles used to be served on the rivers in Thailand. Ours included beef, tripe, meatballs, liver, bean sprouts, pork rind, rice noodle, green onion and a delicious broth with kick of chili flavor.
image

We also ordered their famous Jade noodles, which are colored green with spinach and includes BBQ pork, duck and crab meat. Also very good, but not as flavorful after eating the richly intense boat noodles.

After filling our tummies, we walked along browsing through some of the stores and groceries in Thai Town. We happened across this statue, which I took a picture of because it was shiny. I like shiny things.

Next up was my most anticpated stop – Bhan Kanom Thai, a dessert shop. As you can see from the pictures, the number of choices were staggering, and we felt slightly overwhelmed (but in a good way) trying to figure out what to purchase. We ended up getting some steamed rice filled with taro and banana, taro patties, a filled crispy crepe, and some mini sponge cakes filled with coconut tapioca. Very satisfying.

We also stopped to get a couple more dishes to-go, since we were too full to eat much more at this point. We ordered the pork jerky from Ruen Pair (which was excellent) and the ground chicken basil stir fry from Sanamluang Cafe. So happy we got a chance to try out all of this delicious food.

Lastly, here’s some of the goodies we picked up at the Bangluck Market, a grocery store with a variety of different Thai food items. Can’t wait til we can go back to Thai Town and try out more tasty treats!

Deep dish pizza

On Friday, Mike, Derek and I decided it was time to get some good pizza (as opposed to the Grimaldi’s pile of flaming disappointment we experienced a few weeks ago). We drove on down to Placentia get lunch at Mike’s favorite deep dish pizza place, Tony’s Little Italy. He used to go here during his high school days, so he’s got some fond memories of the place. He told us that back in the day, he could polish off half a pizza by himself. INSANE!

image

We ordered a large deep dish (14″ wide with 10 THICK slices) with pepperoni, sausage, garlic and onion. I only managed to eat 1.5 slices and was full until about 9pm that evening. These slices are no joke! But they are worth it. Each bite is amazing!

Chromat AW14

I was fortunate enough to intern for a company in NYC called Chromat during Fall of 2013. Along with learning a lot of cool construction techniques and helping them with their production orders, I was also given the chance to design for their Autumn/Winter 2014 collection. New York Fashion Week just happened a couple weeks ago, and Chromat debuted their AW14 collection on February 6th. And in that collection there are two garments that I designed!  They are shown below.

Just FYI – the final samples were not constructed by me, because my internship ended before final construction began.

The long trek to Sprinkles Cupcakes

Mike and I decided that it was time for us to experience the new Sprinkles cupcake ATM in person.  In order for us to feel less guilty about scarfing down so many calories in one sitting, we decided to walk there instead of driving.  It was a round trip of 8 miles!  3 hours and a few blisters later, we achieved our goal.  Cupcake success!

Sadly, they weren’t that tasty. The mocha cupcake was the best – covered in sprinkles with a thick creamy frosting and fluffy soft cupcake. The other two were subpar. The black and white tasted pretty ordinary, and the salted caramel had a strange, artificial aftertaste. Not really worth $4 or the walk there! Hopefully the next time I go, they’ll have the flavors I really wanted to try (Strawberry, Chai Latte and Lemon Ginger). I’ll have to give them another chance.

Kula sushi and Blockheads shaved ice

After a few months of pointing to Kula sushi and saying “hey, we should try that!” every time we passed by it on Sawtelle, Mike and I finally got a chance to try it out tonight. The wait was LONG – we had to pass time by shopping at the Daiso next door, and by the time I made it through the entire store (and trust me, I spent a while in there) we still had more waiting to do.

Anyways, once we were seated, the fun began. We tried out a variety of different sushis, all of which were quite tasty. My favorite had to be the soy sake marinated salmon – we ordered three plates extra from the waiter because we didn’t see any more on the conveyor belt!

Taiwanese breakfast

We had a craving for some good Taiwanese breakfast this morning, so we fired up Yelp and found this place in San Gabriel. After a relatively speedy drive over (not much traffic on a Sunday morning, thankfully) we sat down and ordered up some tasty treats.

Of course, we had to get the hot sweetened soy milk with the long cruller donut. We also tried this sausage plate, which came with a boiled egg and steamed vegetables. Not pictured is the beef pastry cake, which was also excellent. My only complaint about the entire meal is that the table behind us ordered stinky tofu while I was eating. Sigh…that stuff should be banned! It’s not natural for food to smell that bad. Otherwise, I give Yung Ho two thumbs up.

Valentine’s Day food adventures

Valentine’s Day for us is just an excuse to eat ALL the food we want! We took a trip out to San Gabriel and tried out a new (to us) Vietnamese restaurant called Golden Deli. We didn’t realize what crazy traffic there would be though, and it took us nearly 1.5 hours to get there. By that time, we were starving and we were this close to giving in and just eating anywhere (the McDonald’s we were passing by were starting to look pretty darn good).

I’m glad we held out, though. Once we got there, we ordered and were brought our food within minutes. It was fresh and delicious! We started off with some crispy egg rolls, and then our entrees followed shortly after. Bun rieu for me, and rare steak pho for Mike. We also had to get my favorite dessert drink, Che Ba Mau. we left the restaurant with extremely full and satisfied tummies.

Blaze pizza

image

Tried out Blaze pizza for lunch today, and boy was I impressed. Unlimited toppings on a personal sized pizza for only $7.99?? Unbelievable! I got italian sausage, pepperoni, smoked ham, applewood bacon, crushed garlic, cloves of garlic, mushroom, basil, sauteed onion, cherry tomatoes, and artichokes. The pizza was ready in about five minutes, and SO good. The crust was not soggy (one of my biggest complaints about a similar pizza joint, 800 Degrees). A very satisfying pizza – thanks to my brother for the recommendation!

85c pastries and Bludso’s BBQ

My coworker told me about Bludso’s BBQ a LONG time ago. I’ve always wanted to go, but the idea of having to go into Compton made me a little bit nervous. After some convincing, Mike managed to get me to agree to make the trek over there today.

We stopped by the new 85c bakery in Gardena first, and loaded up on our favorite breads. I didn’t think we were going to buy that much, but as you can see, we somehow filled up an entire box! Oops. However, I’m not sorry.

image

We made our way over to Bludso’s, and there were quite a few people outside waiting for their food on a Tuesday afternoon. We joined them, and were rewarded shortly after with our order – rib tips, brisket, ribs, and our sides (mac and cheese, beans, and potato salad). Since the place is only a to-go joint with no room for seating, we drove home and dug in.

The rib tips were tasty, but the ribs themselves were slightly disappointing (parts were dry and chewy). However, the brisket made up for everything – it was AMAZING. Tender, flavorful, with just enough fat in the meat so that it melted in your mouth. Totally worth it.
